ALBANY, GA (WALB) -The Georgia Environmental Protection Division is doing what it can to protect people and animals from harmful chemicals.

An old fertilizer warehouse used to be here on a cleared lot underneath the Jefferson Street Bridge.

For years,  people have complained about the eyesore and the chemicals seeping into nearby waters, harming fish and other wildlife.

We spoke to a track supervisor who works near the property.

"They've done a lot of work and hauled a lot of dirt in and fixes it up. They have a nice facility if someone wanted to go back in it they shouldn't have a problem then," said Assistant Track Supervisor, Mike Justice.

The EPD has been working on this project to remove hazardous material and contaminated soil from the property for several years.
