ALBANY, GA (WALB) –  The Lee County School System bought property for a new elementary school, but there's no money for construction just yet.

The School System plans to put an education SPLOST referendum on the ballot next spring to pay for a proposed 15-million dollar elementary school. Once it's complete, students at Lee County Elementary on Firetower Road will be move there, and the old elementary school will become a second middle school.

"The middle school we have 1,600 students, that's a large middle school and when we divide the middle school and have two we would have somewhere around 800, 900 students which is a nice size middle school. That's one of the driving forces," said Dr. Larry Walters, Lee County Superintendent.

School officials hope they can move into the new building at the corner of Lover's Lane and Robert B. Lee in 2014. Crews are already working on projects to provide better access to that area.
