VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) –Gas prices are up lately in south Georgia, but motorists passing through Valdosta on Fourth of July weekend trips say gas here is still cheaper than many places.

A Wisconsin man on his way to see the NASCAR races in Daytona was happy to pay $2.57 a gallon at this Shell station Friday.

He says that's a lot less than he pays back home.

"All the way down we found everything's cheaper. Up by us it's almost three bucks gallon," said traveler DuWayne Demge.

According to AAA, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded in Georgia is $2.63.

It was $2.48 this time last year.
