ALBANY, GA (WALB) – Westover Boulevard at Nottingham Way is Albany's most dangerous intersection for a ninth straight year, though the number of crashes there actually dropped last year.
In 2009, an average of more than 35,000 cars a day passed through the intersection. That's three times the amount of traffic as in 2001.
There were 37 crashes in the intersection in 2009, two fewer than in 2008.
A road safety audit came up with a plan to make the intersection safer, but there's no money to make the changes.
"Unfortunately with the economy the way that is, those grant funds are not available. Not only for the city of Albany but statewide. So we are working on trying to find some more grant money so we can go ahead and make those changes," said Albany Safe Communities Coordinator Michele Strickland.
Because of road safety audits and changes made to the 2008 most dangerous intersections, five of those intersections did not make the 2009 list.
