Monroe runs away from field

May 10, 2003

The third time was the charm for head coach Octavia Jones and the Monroe High Tornadoettes. The Tornadoettes ran away with their third straight track and field state championship Saturday at Hugh Mills Stadium with 103 total team points. The title is the first for Monroe in AAA, which won it's previous two in AAAA.

The day started and ended with Monroe winning state titles as they dominated in both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. The Tornadoettes other state championship Saturday came in the 100 meter dash when Tierra Watts cruised to victory in 12.381 seconds. Watts' teammate Lakeshia Bryant finished right behind her in 12.400 seconds, giving Monroe 18 team points in one event.

The Tornadoettes were expected to be in a dog fight with Northeast Macon on the final day, but the Lady Raiders only managed 65.5 points, and were never really in contention for the title. Monroe's three-peat is the first of any kind for girls teams in Dougherty County. The team's performance was so impressive that senior Kimberly Mulkey was offered and accepted a full track and field scholarship to the University of Mississippi. Mulkey was the anchor leg on both relays and finished fifth in the 400 meter dash.

In other classifications, Landmark Christian won their fourth consecutive Class A championship with 162 points. In Class AA, Southeast Bulloch edged Pace Academy 45 to 41. Dunwoody claimed the Class AAAA title with 50 points and Collins Hill took the top prize in AAAAA with 53 points.
