ALBANY,  GA (WALB)  --  The downtown Albany power outage was caused when a tree limb fell onto a main power line at South Jefferson and South Madison Streets. City tree trimmers were clipping overgrown trees when it happened.

Power was knocked out to 250 homes and businesses and most traffic lights in downtown were out as well. Power has now been restored.

When the power was out, a person was stuck inside an elevator at an office building at 230 South Jackson Street, the result of the power surge and subsequent outages around downtown Albany.

Firefighters went to the main library to rescue several people stuck on the 3rd floor. They were in wheelchairs and unable to get down to the main floor because of the outage.

Burglar alarms sounded at several businesses, and traffic lights went dark in the downtown area.

About 12:45PM, power was being restored in downtown Albany.
