Neighborhood watch parties combat crime

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Several beak-ins this weekend give people a good reason to hold neighborhood watches. People in the Shadowlawn neighborhood held their first neighborhood watch block party Sunday.

This weekend alone, nine burglaries occurred in Albany. Neighbors have their eyes peeled for these thieves. Monica Mims held a neighborhood watch block party after burglars targeted her home last month.

They broke in through the kitchen door, went into her bedroom and snagged cash and a camera while she was out.

"Even though it's just materials, they work hard for it. It wasn't give to us so it shouldn't be taken from us," said Mims.

Albany Police say last month 146 burglaries occurred in Albany compared to 130 burglaries in May of last year.
