ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Former Sherwood Christian Academy pitcher Jason Townsend had a tough decision to make after he was drafted two weeks ago by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

After careful thought, Townsend has decided to sign a pro contract.

Jason Townsend leaves for State College Pennsylvania on Sunday to join the Pirates minor league team in the New York-Penn League.

Townsend was a 31st round pick of the Pirates.

He had to decide whether to take that money or return for his senior year at Alabama where he would likely be one of their top starting pitchers.

Townsend says the risk of injury is the big reason he is signing with the Pirates.

Jason T

ownsend said. "My sophomore year at Chipola I hurt my back and missed half the year. So, I think ultimately why risk getting hurt. Something happening my senior when you have got the chance to play professionally. Why not take the chance?"

Jason Townsend will start off in the bullpen for the Pirates and hopes to work his way into the starting rotation.

He becomes the sixth Alabama baseball player to sign a pro contract.
