Dougherty County Census a success!

ALBANY, GA (WALB) –  The Census 2010 Campaign was a success in Dougherty County.

A celebration was held in downtown Albany Thursday afternoon. Final numbers show 72 percent of Dougherty Countians returned census forms this year, that's up 10 percent from the last census in 2000.

"We're very excited about that, that the community bought in and that this committee was very successful getting the word out about the importance of the census to our community," said Michael McCoy, Assistant Dougherty County Administrator.

The credit for the higher participation was given to the Census 2010 Committee when canvassed the community to raise awareness about the importance of being counted.

Ahead of heavy rain showers and winds projected for our area, the Georgia State Patrol said there's not as many travelers on the roads during this holiday weekend.  "So far I think this attributed to the weather and gas prices being so high, it seems that in our area of the state, traffic has been down some," said Trooper Christopher Jewell, GSP Post 40.
