ALBANY, GA (WALB) –   A Sylvester man who drowned trying to save two little boys has been awarded the Carnegie Medal for heroism.

Gary DeWayne Vinson, who went by 'D. J.' drowned in 2008, while trying to save two brothers who were caught in the swift moving Flint River.

One of the boys, Joshua Perry, and the 23-year-old Vinson drowned.

Vinson was one of 23 people hailed as a Hero by the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission Thursday.

The medal is given to those who risk their lives to an extraordinary degree while saving or attempting to save the lives of others.

Vinson and two of the others chosen lost their lives performing the acts of heroism.

The awardees or their next of kin will also receive a financial grant.
