(Atlanta-AP) -- The state Labor Department reports today that Georgia's unemployment rate was 4.6% in March, unchanged from February.

 In March 2002, the state's jobless rate was 5.1%. Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond says some job opportunities are available, but employers are not hiring in significant numbers.

The state also released the March unemployment rates for Georgia metropolitan areas, compared with the jobless rate for February:

  • Albany, 5.6%, up from 4.7%
  • Athens, 2.8%, up from 2.7%
  • Atlanta, 4.7%, unchanged
  • Augusta, 4.4%, down from 4.8%
  • Columbus, 5%, down from5.1%
  • Macon, 3.9%, up from 3.8%
  • Savannah, 3.5%, unchanged
