CAIRO, GA (WALB) –A man police say robbed the Cairo Walmart and kidnapped two clerks at gunpoint is in jail.

Willie Snell didn't get far.

Police caught him quickly and discovered his weapon was a BB gun.

It's business as usual Tuesday at the Walmart in Cairo. But over the weekend, a couple clerks got the scare of their lives when police say this man, 43-year old Willie Snell, robbed the store at gunpoint.

"It's kind of scary and eerie. But it doesn't surprise me because people are stealing like crazy here," says former Walmart employee, Jacqueline Johnson.

Snell entered the store around 4:00 Sunday morning, carrying what looked like a gun. Investigators say he robbed the store and on his way out ordered two clerks, Lavonda Bolden and Julie Bradshaw, to go with him.

While searching for the suspect, police found the two clerks on the east side of the store. They were extremely frightened, but otherwise unharmed.

"I'm glad nobody got hurt. I sure thank God that nobody got hurt."

Jacqueline Johnson used to work at the Cairo Walmart and knows the two clerks. She says working anywhere overnight comes with risks.

"It just goes with the territory. People steal all the time. I used to be a people greeter here. People greeters here are like security but they just watch. We watch to make sure no one steals, just watch them go in and watch them go out."

Johnson says Walmart employees are trained on how to deal with an unruly customer, but she says no one ever really thinks they'll be the victim of a violent attack.

"I don't know, I guess you just think you're untouchable. I mean, I know things happen and it could happen to me. I just don't fear that way and don't think about it."

Now Johnson says she'll stay more alert to her surroundings. But she says the robbery won't scare her away from shopping at her favorite store.

Willie Snell is charged with armed robbery, kidnapping, and aggravated assault.

Police caught him near the store. He remains in the Grady County jail.
