Monroe and Northeast Macon have won five state girls track titles in the last three years in different classifications.
This weekend, one of these two track superpowers will more than likely see their streak of consecutive team titles end.
After winning two straight AAAA state titles, the Monroe Lady Tornadoes will be competing at the AAA level this year.
A classification that has been owned for the last three years by Northeast Macon and their top speedster Stephanie Smith.
What makes this battle so interesting is that these two teams strengths are in the same events.
Both Monroe and Northeast Macon won the 400 and mile relays in last year's state track meet.
Two other events to watch will be the AAA girls 200 and 400 meter dashes between Monroe's Shequita Draper and Northeast Macon's Stephanie Smith.
Smith is the defending state champion in the 400 meter and finished second in the 200 last year while Draper was second in the AAAA 200 meter dash and has the fastest qualifying time among the 16 qualifiers in this year's AAA 400 meter dash.
The team battle in AAA has all the makings of an old west shootout and the Lady Tornadoes say they are ready to run.
Senior Kim Mulkey said "We just really like this is our year to win a third state. They won three times in a row.
We just feel like we can take that from them." Sophomore Tierra Watts said "We matchup pretty well but if we pull through and concentrate we should beat them."
The 2003 GHSA girls state track meet starts at 4:00 p.m. Thursday with qualifying heats in the track events for AAAAA, AAAA and AAA classifications. The 1600 meter finals in AAAAA, AAAA and AAA will also be run and the AA and A finals in the 3200 meter run.
The field event finals start at 9:00 a.m. Friday and the qualifying heats for classes AA and A starting at 5:00 p.m. Friday with the finals in the 1600 meter for AA and A and the finals for 3200 meter run in AAAAA, AAAA and AAA.
The finals in the remaining track events start at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
