Dougherty County, GA (WALB) –   A former Dougherty County Police Officer was found dead today outside a church of an apparent self- inflicted gunshot wound.

66-year-old Earnest Lee Turney was found dead in his car parked at the New Mount Holder Baptist Church on Harris Road Wednesday morning.

Police say he died from a single gunshot wound to the head and had been dead several hours when he was found.

Turney left the Dougherty County Police force in 1982 and worked for several other law enforcement agencies.
