Rough weather rumbles through Albany neighborhoods

By Ben Roberts - bio | email

ALBANY, GA (WALB) – A car crashed into a downed tree in the 700 block Mitchell Avenue Tuesday night. Part of a large tree fell across most of the road before nine p.m. It had been reported, but no crews had come to take care of it yet when a driver came down the road. He didn't see the tree until it was too late. He was not hurt.

A few blocks away on Rood Street, high winds blew down several trees and large limbs. One pine tree was resting on a power line. Another toppled tree brought a power line down across the street, knocking out power to nearby homes.

There was also a lot of lightning when those storms blew through. A pine tree on Gillespie Avenue in west central Albany took a direct hit from a lightning bolt. The strike left a visible line right down the trunk and wood chips where the electricity came out at the bottom of the tree, but the tree is still standing.
