ALBANY, GA (WALB) – Albany's city manager drastically reduced the punishment for a police officer who violated department policy and put people at risk of identity theft.  Captain Ernest Williams will be suspended for five days without pay.

Police Chief John Proctor originally recommended he be suspended for 30 days for dumping sensitive city documents in an alley back in March.  Those documents contained critical data including social security numbers of police officers and civilians.

Williams appealed to city manager Al Lott who reduced the disciplinary action last week.     Williams has worked for the city of Albany for more than 30 years and serves as the bodyguard for Mayor Willie Adams.
