Mellon madness hits Moultrie

By Jennifer Emert - bio | email

ALBANY, GA (WALB) –  The Moultrie Farmer's Market is in the midst of melon season.

Truck loads of cantaloupes are pouring into the Market from fields in Georgia and Florida. The Farmer's Market expects to clean and pack up 30,000 bins. Each one contains about 110 cantaloupes. The heat has the crop coming in quicker than expected and packers working into the early morning hours.

"Worked until about 2:30 packing. The temperature really brought the crop on a little bit quicker than we expected," said Mike Mobley, Moultrie Farmer's Market.

Vegetable production in Colquitt County accounts for nearly 30 percent of more than 300 million in farm production each year. Colquitt County has traditionally been a state leader in agricultural production.
