MOULTRIE, GA (WALB) -

ALBANY, GA (WALB) –  A suspect in a Moultrie armed robbery is dead, shot by the owner of a business he tried to rob.

Monday night, two men tried to rob a woman outside the Cuban restaurant she owns.

One of them shot her, but the woman's husband fired back. She's recovering, but one of the robbers was found dead today near the restaurant.

Since school let out Moultrie Police have seen an increase in armed robberies. Police weren't surprised that some owners are arming themselves to protect their businesses from this type of crime.

Not far from the bloody scene at a Moultrie Cuban restaurant neighbors made another gruesome discovery, the body of 23 year old Arius Martin one of two suspects. Neighbors say they heard the gunfire.

"Just one shot, after that shot I went back in the house and that was it," said a neighbor.

It was gunfire that came from Juan Antillon the restaurant owner after his wife Rosa Medrano was grazed by a bullet from the suspect's gun when she came face to face with robbers up outside the restaurant.

"Gunfire was exchanged between, there were two offenders and him and he advised me there was only one fire arm that was fired at him. He said one of the offenders did not have a fire arm," said Moultrie Police Commander Alfonso Cook.

Antillon told police he didn't think he shot anyone. Now police know differently. "He was shot in his upper torso."

Police searched the area, but never spotted Martin's body, just a short distance away, but in search this morning they found a gun and items taken from the restaurant.

"There was property that was taken from the scene found with his body," said Cook.

With an increase in armed robberies already this summer police don't blame business owners for arming themselves.

"If they have that right they're doing that and if you go in and cause an infraction against someone there's the possibility something like this will happen," said Cook.

However they urge business owners to call the police first. Police say they'll complete their investigation and turn it over to the District Attorney's Office who will determine if anyone will be charged in the case. They're also following up on leads concerning the second robber in this case.

Police say the robber who got away is black with twists or dreads in his hair. They say he's between 5' 3" and 5' 7".

If you have information on the case, you're asked to call Moultrie Police.
