ALBANY, GA (WALB) –  Albany's Stash the Trash event is has become a model for others across the state.

This year, a record number of volunteers participated in the event. Organizers say 2,716 helped pick up trash along 131 miles of Dougherty County Highway. With the Department of Transportation cutting back highway clean up efforts, having 94 teams picking up trash made a big difference.

"It speaks for our community and you know some of the other larger communities in Georgia just had 200 and 300 volunteers. I was asked to speak at a state conference about how we've organized our stash the trash event and how successful it is," said Keep Albany Dougherty Beautiful Director Judy Bowles.

Judy Bowles told County Commissioners more than 125 government employees participated in this years event.
