LAFAYETTE, LA (WALB) - The Albany Panthers will have to wait until next week to clinch the top seed in the SIFL playoffs.
The Panthers falls to Lafayette 48-46 Saturday night at the CajunDome.
The Panthers trailed by a touchdown 29-22 at halftime.
The Wildcatters converted a Cecil Lester interception early in the third quarter into a touchdown.
Lafayette then got a safety on pressure on Lester that resulted in a penalty in the endzone.
The Wildcatters built a 17 point lead but Lester touchdown passes to Antwone Savage and Clenton Rafe and a safety by the Panthers defense cut the lead to 41-40.
Juan Bongorra missed the chance to tie the game on ensuing kickoff which was returned to Panther territory.
Lafayette scored a touchdown to run their lead to 48-40.
Cecil Lester threw his sixth touchdown pass of the game with :13 left but the Panthers two point try failed.
Albany (7-2) is back in on the road next week at Greenville.
