ALBANY, GA (WALB) – A south Georgia Sheriff avoided time in jail, at least for now, by appealing his contempt of court charge.
Terrell Sheriff John Bowens was sentenced to serve 5 days in the Dougherty County Jail starting Monday, but now the appeals court will hear his case. Last week, Judge Dane Perkins ruled Bowens intentionally violated a judge's order earlier this year by not bringing inmates to court.
The sheriff claimed he didn't have enough staff to transport inmates safely. The Sheriff's attorney called the ruling outlandish and said Perkins' ruling went too far.
