ALBANY, GA (WALB) –  One of Lee County's main thoroughfares will close starting Monday June 7, 2010 to motorists so traffic can eventually be improved.

Starting Monday morning, Robert B. Lee Drive will close from Highway 19 to Park Drive while crews work near the intersection. It's part of a project to create a truck bypass around Leesburg. The road hopefully will only be closed next week, but work in the area will continue through the summer.

"We're going to have to put two 42 inch pipes right across the road, real close to US 19 and this really creates a safety problem if we don't close the road off and so once we get the pipes in we'll do some widening along Robert B. Lee and Lover's Lane and State Route 32, we'll be putting in left turn lanes," said Bob Alexander, Lee County Planning Director.

In addition to the turn lanes, crews will also widen the road and place bicycle paths on either side of Robert B. Lee. The work is expected to be complete before school starts in the fall.
