ALBANY, GA (WALB) – Thursday was graduation day for a select group of students and their families.

13-people graduated from the Family Literacy Connection.

The program helps adults earn a GED and tries to strengthen family ties. Many students have faced adversity others can only imagine.

We talked to two graduates about getting their degrees, something they say they'll build on.

"It took me a couple of years, but I said I have to do this for my family, it's a dream come true," said Derek Pullen, Graduate.

"We all grew up with backgrounds of being misfits, having a hard time succeeding and being told we'll never amount to anything, we pulled through and we're doing it, nothing can hold us back," said Katrina Crawson, Graduate.

85 percent of program graduates use their GED to further their education.

Family Literacy Connection has been operating for eight years but recently lost the grant that was their main source of funding.

If you would like to donate to the program or volunteer call Sandy Bamford at (229) 888-2414.
