Dawson, GA (WALB) – Terrell County Commissioners say if they can't depend on the Sheriff to provide enough security at the Courthouse, they'll find a way to do it themselves.
Commissioners have met with Judge Joe Bishop to look at alternatives. He suggested installing more cameras around the courthouse and having someone man the courthouse metal detector that is typically turned off.
The judge asked for five security workers when court is in session. Hiring an outside agency to provide armed personnel could cost more than $22 an hour per worker.
"The county is very, very concerned about the effect of hiring armed personnel on a regular basis would have on the budget and quite frankly it's affecting employee pay raises," said Terrell County Attorney Ed Collier.
Wednesday, Commissioners voted to send County Attorney Ed Collier back to the Judge to confirm how many court personnel he thinks he'll need and whether they need to be armed.
