ALBANY, GA (WALB) –Thieves are targeting lawn mowers and lawn equipment, and Police say you need to safeguard yours.

Dougherty County Police say they have seen a big increase in the number of lawn mowers and equipment being stolen so far this spring. Tuesday Barbara Holmes found her two lawn mowers and blower, worth more than $900, had been taken from her garage on Elizabeth Avenue.

Dougherty County Police Captain Jimmy Sexton said "I think a lot of it is being sold on the streets, or traded for drugs. That sort of thing. A lot of times it ends up in flea markets."

Police say you need to write down the serial numbers off your equipment in case they are stolen, so that they can be identified if recovered. You might also put an identifying mark on your mower. Make it as tough as possible for thieves, by chaining up your mowers as well as locking them inside your shed.
