State re-applies for education grants

By Ben Roberts - bio | email

ATLANTA, GA (WALB) – Georgia narrowly missed out in the first round of federal "Race to the Top" education grants earlier this year. Leaders hope to be luckier the second time around.

The state's new application includes 26 systems including Dougherty County, Ben Hill County,  and Valdosta city schools. They would split $400 million dollars over four years to turn around low-achieving schools and develop programs to prepare students better for college and the workplace.

The U.S. Department of Education should announce the winners in August or September.
