It was a tough end of a great season for the Valdosta State softball team who came within one run of winning the school's first ever national championship.

The Lady Blazers got a big welcome home from VSU fans when the team rolled back into Valdosta late Tuesday afternoon.

One day after the Lady Blazers lost 4-3 to Hawaii Pacific in the DII World Series championship game in St. Joseph's, Missouri.

It was the first ever trip to the World Series for the Valdosta State softball team.

Even though they lose two very good seniors in All-American Alyssa Shirey and Stephanie Carlson, the rest of this team will be back next season and wanting to win the national championship.

Junior outfielder Melessa Jackson said. "I have never been to a school that was so supported by the fans and people in the community and I love it."

Sophomore Marti Littlefield said. "It was a great ride. Hopefully, next year we will take the win."

Head coach Thomas Macera said. "The girls are very upset right now and so am I. Come August we will reset and try to make another run."

The Valdosta State softball team finished the season with a record of 51-9.
