ALBANY, GA (WALB) – Former Brooks County Sheriff Richard Chafin went on trial in federal court in Albany Wednesday.
He's accused of spending $63,000 from the jail commissary fund.
Chafin, who lost his re-election bid in 2008, is charged with theft by taking.
County officials began an audit at the request of the new Sheriff Mike Dewey after he took office last January.
