ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The road to the Division II Softball World Series has not been easy for the Valdosta State Lady Blazers.

The Lady Blazers had to twice fight off elimination in both rounds of the regionals to earn their first ever World Series appearance.

The Lady Blazers packed up and left Valdosta early Tuesday morning for St. Joseph's, Missouri.

The VSU women will work out Wednesday and open play on Thursday.

Getting to The World Series has been the goal of head coach Thomas Macera since he took over the Lady Blazers program five years.

Now that they have made it, the Lady Blazers goal is to bring home the school's first national championship in softball.

Pitcher Holly Satterfield said. "We are really excited. We finally made it there. We should have last year but we are really glad to be there this year."

Catcher Alyssa Shirey said. "It is still not real to me. I am just waiting to get on the plane and see if it sets in."

The Lady Blazers open the DII World Series Thursday at 3:30 p.m. against Bloomsburg.
