ALBANY, GA (WALB) –  Members of the 48th Brigade of the Georgia Army National Guard have been returning home from Afghanistan for the past couple of days. The American Red Cross will pay tribute to them, as well as to all veterans of all wars and conflicts, on May 22.

The Middle Flint Chapter of the American Red Cross is hosting a huge "Welcome Home" event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 22 at the Sumter County Fairgrounds on State Road 30 West, near Americus.

Leisa Cross, executive editor of the Middle Flint Chapter, said the event will be for the 48th and other veterans in the community, and their families.

"This event will encompass the 48th any other veterans from the community. We want them to know how special they are to us. It's also a good support system for the families and the people coming home. They've already been there and done that."

Cross said the event will include games for children such as carnival-type games with prizes and a jumping castle; some games for the grownups, too, like bungee run and a basketball shoot; food, candy and soft drinks.

She said the Sumter County Parks and Recreation Department has hired a band, the Hollywood Band, for those who want to dance or just listen.

She stressed that this event is free to all the veterans and their families.
