THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) -  On Friday, the Thomasville High boys soccer team had to sit through a two hour lightning delay before beating Wesleyan to win the Class AA/A state title.

Lightning did strike when the Bulldogs became the first team from south Georgia to win a state soccer title.

Thomasville's state title win is the first for south Georgia and may be a win that paves the way for other schools in this area of the state to claim state titles in a sport dominated by Atlanta area schools.

The state title made the annual team's banquet even more special Monday night at Thomasville High.

The 12 seniors wanted to win this title after losing last year in the semifinals.

The Bulldogs also found out they had a lot of support from their own backyard.

Senior Johnny Peralta said. "It is still sinking in right now. It is unreal. It has been our goal since last season. Now that we have finally done it. We are going to ride this until we go to college. It is great."

Head coach Ernest Bass said. "We got flowers, e-mails and calls from other schools. Congratulating us and telling us how proud they were for south Georgia."

Thomasville High boys soccer team went unbeaten with 19-0-4 record.
