VALDOSTA, Ga. – After falling to Palm Beach Atlantic in the first game of the day, Valdosta State rebounded with a 3-0 victory over West Florida to stay alive in the national tournament. With the win Valdosta State advances to play Palm Beach Atlantic at 1:30 p.m. Sunday. The Lady Blazers will need to beat PBA twice to advance to super regionals.
In the elimination game against West Florida, the Lady Blazers brought the big bats. Alyssa Shirey, Stephanie Carlson and Morgan Johnson, all three All-GSC East performers, hit home runs. Shirey started the scoring in the second inning while Johnson and Carlson each hit their homers in the sixth.
That was all VSU needed to put away the Argonauts thanks to a shutout from Margaret Carter. Carter moved to 19-5 on the season with the win. She only gave up three hits and struck out six with no walks.
The Argonauts end their season at 40-16 while the Lady Blazers stay alive for Sunday at 44-7.
Valdosta State will meet Palm Beach Atlantic for the second time this weekend after falling to the Sailfish in the early game, 3-2. PBA pitcher Ashley Jones struck out 11 while the VSU duo of Carter and Holly Satterfield struck out just four. Both teams gave up three hits.
It was a 2-2 dead heat after both teams scored two runs each in the third inning. Then in the fifth inning through a combination of errors and hitting, the Sailfish put up the winning run.
For the day, VSU's top performers at the plate were Shirey (two for four with a home run and three RBIs) and Carlson (three for five with a homer).
First pitch for Sunday's game between Valdosta State and Palm Beach Atlantic has been moved up to 12:30 because of weather.
