VALDOSTA, Ga. – Valdosta State started the NCAA South Regional Tournament with an 8-0 victory over Albany State. The win will put VSU against Palm Beach Atlantic, who beat West Florida in the first game of the tournament, at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. West Florida and Albany State will play at 4 p.m.
Holly Satterfield moved to 25-2 with the win. She struck out five, walked two and allowed three hits in five innings of play. As usual, she received ample support from the VSU offense.
Morgan Johnson started quick with a two-run homer in the first inning. After that, Marti Littlefield hit a solo shot in the third inning. With that, Albany State made the switch from Melissa Hurst to Sasha Reece in the pitcher's circle. It did not help.
April Hutchens hit a deep shot to left center for a stand up double in the fourth. She moved to third on a wild pitch and came home on a single from Amber Shaw. Johnson scored next off a single up the middle from Alyssa Shirey. Littlefield was able to score as well before the fourth inning ended.
Just two runs away from a run-rule victory, the Lady Blazers were set to close it out in the fifth. Hutchens hit another double and slid in safe just in time. Shaw reached first after being hit to set up Johnson to do more damage to the Golden Rams. She singled to left field to score Hutchens, and Shaw ended the game on a single from Littlefield.
Five Lady Blazers notched two hits in the game with a perfect outing from Shaw, Johnson and Shirey. Hutchens went two for three with two runs while Johnson was two for four with two runs and three runs batted in. Littlefield scored two runs with two RBIs while Shirey notched one RBI. Shaw also scored two runs with one RBI.
