ASU to hold new student orientation Monday

Albany - New students will arrive at Albany State University on Monday for summer semester orientation. During orientation, these new students will learn about ASU and register for summer semester classes.

Dr. Melvin A. Shelton, director of the Honors Program and Academic Success Initiatives will preside at the opening session, which will begin at 8:35 a.m. in the ACAD Auditorium.

The session will feature greetings from ASU President Everette J. Freeman and a welcome from Ashlee Fogle, Student Government Association president. Dr. Abiodun Ojemakinde, vice president for Academic Affairs will provide an academic overview followed by information about financial aid from Thomas Harris, director of financial aid.

New students will learn about the First and Second Year Experience Program from Sherrell Byrd, program coordinator.

An information fair will begin at 10:05 a.m. and feature table displays in the ACAD Atrium. Representatives will be at the tables to answer questions and provide additional information.

Table displays will include Academic Advisement and Registration; the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Advising; the James Pendergrast Memorial Library; the First and Second Year Experience Program; Passport Applications; Financial Aid; Student Health Services; Ram ID Cards; Bookstore; Student Life/Judicial; Campus Technology; Counseling and Disability Services; Parking and Safety; Housing and Residence Life; Learning Communities; and Admissions.

At 10:55 a.m. students will go to breakout sessions specific to student type: new freshmen, transfer students or transient students.

After lunch in the dining hall, orientation participants will meet in academic departments specific to their majors for advisement and registration for classes. Summer semester classes begin on May 19.

New Student Orientation Programs for fall semester will be held this summer.
