Sumter escapee caught

April 24, 2003

Schley County-- The Sumter County escapee has been caught--and even the authorities marvel at the teen's resourcefulness. 16-year-old Donovan Kilgore has been on the run since Sunday, navigating through dense forest and drinking murky swamp water to survive.

When cops closed in on him near Stevens Road in Schley County this morning, the young escapee simply threw up his hands and yelled "You got me!"

16-year-old Donovan Kilgore was caught here--in this pine grove off Steven's Road in Schley County. Schley County Sheriff Shane Tondee says, "The dog got in his trial right past the markings in the grass there and where he got him was in this little pine head right here."

That was at 10 a.m. Thursday morning, 90 hours after Kilgore escaped from the Youth Development Center in Sumter County, "I think he would have given up eventually, he was tired, hungry, he said he had been drinking creek water."

Janet North lives close by where the inmate was found, "My sister-in-law called a while ago and told us they caught him we were glad."

She is relieved now, but the past few days have been tense, "The kids outside playing, yeah, we were really worried." The worry is over for these Schley County residents, but for Kilgore, it's just begun. He is facing felony charges for his escape, and will be moved out of the Sumter County YDC.

Donovan Kilgore has been moved to an undisclosed Juvenile Justice institution. Kilgore will be tried in Atlanta for felony murder, committed during an armed robbery he has already been convicted for.
