    The rate increased because of seasonal factors, such as the summer job loss among non-contract school workers and temporary layoffs, primarily in manufacturing. There were 60,500 jobs in Albany in June, down by 300, or 0.5 percent, from 60,800 in May. Most of the loss came in state government and the service-related industries.More >>

ALBANY, GA (WALB) –A Dougherty County Jail Detention officer and his brother have been arrested in an undercover drug sting.

Detention officer Granvil Smith and his brother Katuri Smith are charged with selling Xanax and OxyContin to an undercover agent. Police say the operation took place in the parking lot of the Kentucky Fried Chicken on West Oglethorpe about 7:30 Tuesday night.

 The detention officer was immediately fired by the Sheriff. He is being held in isolation for his protection at the Dougherty County jail.
