Caught on tape: Ocilla man steals $1800 worth in cigarettes

OCILLA,  GA (WALB) – An Ocilla man is in the Irwin county jail after police say he broke into three businesses in just 24 hours...for cigarettes!

Police say he stole $1,800 in cigarettes (roughly 360 packs) and cost the store owners more than $2,000 in damage. Police say the smash and grabs started early Monday morning at the Harvey's in Ocilla and ended at a Citgo early Tuesday morning.

And just before the suspect was about to commit a 4th burglary the police chief caught him red-handed.

Police say 33-year-old Corry Wynn started his cigarette shopping spree Monday at 2AM when he burst into the Harvey's on Irwin Avenue and left with a handful.

His next stop came late Monday night around 10PM. This is video of him at the E-Z Mart where police say he used a tire iron to bash through the front window.

After grabbing dozens of cigarette packs, police say he changed clothes and came back two hours later for more, leaving with a total of $800 in smokes.

But it wasn't enough for Wynn. Only an hour after leaving the E-Z Mart for the second time he hit up the Citgo by bashing through a window with a cinder block!

As police were processing that scene, the Ocilla Police chief says he arrested Wynn down the road at the Ocilla Quick Stop with a brick in his hand, ready to commit a 4th burglary.

Now Wynn is in jail, and store owners have a big mess to clean up.

Police say the smoke bandit confessed to everything and is charged with four counts of burglary. He was on active parole for a previous robbery and burglary in Irwin County.

Police say stealing cigarettes and selling them on the street has become a profitable business for criminals.
