ALBANY, GA (WALB) –  The spotlight was on educators tonight at the Dougherty County Teacher of Year banquet.

Teachers of the year from each of the 27-schools in the system were honored.

Stephen Davis, a 5th grade math teacher at Lamar Reese Elementary School, was named countywide teacher of the year.

Superintendent Sally Whatley says the ceremony highlights the best of the best in the classroom.

"These teachers are selected by their colleagues and they are the best of the best. They represent all of us as educators and I'm very proud of them. It's a real privilege to honor them tonight," said Whatley.

34 school system retirees were also honored at the ceremony.

Davis will go on to compete for Georgia's Teacher of the Year.
