ALBANY, GA (WALB) -Many sons and daughters are spending time with their moms this Mother's Day. One son can't do that. His mom passed away. She was an important community figure.

Christ Cartmell planted a Liberty Elm tree at Chehaw Park in honor of his mother Nancy Cartmell in 2007. He says it's tripled in size. Cartmell served on Albany's Tree board and played a big role in 1994 flood relief effort.

"Mom was always adamant growing up to never go to the gravesite because she wasn't there so we go to the tree where mom is and she's here today and we love her to death," said Cartmell.

The family held a cookout to remember his mother. Cartmell says the Liberty Elm is one of the only trees of its kind in the state.
