Monroe girls track wins 2nd straight state championship

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The Monroe girls track team remained atop the mountain on Saturday winning the state championship once again.

The Tornadoes finished 1st and 2nd in the 100 meter hurdles as Lakeisha Jackson won in 14.78 seconds and followed by her teammate Ashley Johnson. Jackson then went on to win the 300 meter hurdles and Johnson finished 5th.

Monroe also won the 4x100 and took 3rd in the 4x400.

Mimieux Land was the star of the field events on Friday winning the triple jump, high jump, and long jump.

Of the meet's 16 events Monroe took first in six and finished with 102 points, 38 more than runner up St. Pius.

Head Coach Octavia Jones will be taking over the football program at Westover in the fall and is glad his run with the Lady Tornadoes ended with another championship.

"I'm like a proud poppa today. I'm able to walk out with a state championship and that means a lot to me. The girls dedicating this championship to me that makes me feel real good" said Jones.

"It feels good we wanted to send coach Jones out with a state championship" said Jackson.

"It's over joying especially as coach Jones leaving we had to do it again for him and we're gonna do it for the next two years as long as I'm here" said Land.
