Albany - What would you do if you were Mayor? An Albany student is receiving a lot of attention for his answer to that question. Sherwood Christian Academy 6th grader Andrew Hemken won the fourth annual "If I were Mayor" essay contest for the Albany district.

His ideas for the city were to build more parks, give firefighters and police officers raises, and build homeless shelters. "I won a $250 savings bond and a trophy from the Georgia Municipal Association for winning the essay contest," said Hemken. "I was rally excited."

Tuesday night, city commissioners recognized Hemken and other local essay winners - Chelsea Brown, Rick Fowler, Jasmyne Martin, Ebony Guidry, Lindsey Bruner, and Jonathan Hill.
