Six UGA players face misdemeanor drug charges

April 22, 2003

(Athens-AP) -- Five Georgia football players and one basketball player, all freshmen, have been arrested on drug charges.

All were charged with the misdemeanor possession this afternoon and released on bail from Athens-Clarke County jail.

The football players are cornerback Tim Jennings of Orangeburg, South Carolina; wide receiver Bryan McClendon of Atlanta; cornerback DeMario Minter of Stone Mountain; wide receiver Mario Raley of Charlotte, North Carolina; and offensive lineman Randall Swoopes of Athens

The basketball player is guard Wayne Arnold of Lilburn.

Georgia football coach Mark Richt has suspended the players for at least the first two games of the 2003 season.

The players also will do 30 hours of community service and will be subject to school discipline of additional physical activity and counseling.

Basketball coach Dennis Felton is out of state and says he has not talked to Arnold.

He said in a statement he will decide Arnold's punishment when he returns.

The six were arrested Thursday night at a campus dormitory.
