Sumter escapee on the run in Schley

Albany-- The search for the Sumter County escapee has moved into Schley County. Sixteen-year-old Donovan Kilgore has traveled about 19 miles north of the Youth Development Campus, where he was awaiting trial for felony murder.

Kilgore has survived in snake invested swamps and thick brush, without food or water, since Sunday afternoon. Now, authorities think they have him cornered.

10 law enforcement agencies are searching for Donovan Kilgore. Schley County Sheriff Shane Tondee says, "About 9:00 last night we had an officer spot him in the woods, he gave chase for about 100 yards and lost him in the woods."

Navigating through the thick brush in this heavily wooded area of Schley County has been difficult for authorities. But, Sheriff Shane Tondee believes they have Kilgore boxed in near Stevens and Harper Roads.

"It's sort of scary." That area is in 17-year-old Casey Battle's backyard--and the thought of a dangerous escapee nearby is frightening, "They said he's my age and he's pretty big. He's around my house and he's scared and he's hungry and he's looking for somewhere to go."

Authorities think hunger and exhaustion will force Kilgore out of the woods. If not, they'll go in and get him.

Donovan Kilgore is charged with murder in Fulton County. The two other inmates who escaped with him Sunday have been caught.
