ALBANY, GA (WALB) –  Lee County Commissioners set a new policy they say will require fiscal responsibility.

During a special session Thursday afternoon, Commissioners approved a fiscal management policy that requires the county to prepare a five-year financial forecast. It also governs how the annual budget can be changed and how the county will manage debt.

Commissioner Bill Williams says the county has followed the guidelines for years but never officially adopted a policy. The policy also requires a balanced budget, and for that commissioners say they need to boost revenue.

"It's a big problem, we're down about a million dollars from last year and what we're trying to do is achieve commercial growth and that's going to be the salvation, is attracting commercial growth," said Bill Williams, Lee County Commissioner.

Commissioners also approved the development of Forrester Senior Village on Forrester Parkway. The development will include 78 apartment units just west of Highway 19 for people 55 and older.
