Sherwood complex grows

ALBANY, GA (WALB) –  Sherwood Baptist Church is one of the largest churches in Albany. We've all seen the success of the movies the church has made, and now that success is allowing them to give back to the community.

Big plans are underway at the Sherwood Sports Complex in Dougherty County. New tennis courts, baseball fields, soccer fields and more are under construction. When the sports complex first started six years ago, it began as a 40 acre site.  That has now doubled.

At a time when many companies and churches are struggling to pay the bills, Sherwood is expanding.

"Our folks have sacrificed," says Pastor Dr. Michael Catt.  "We have a campaign called 'generations.'  We have a saying, whoever wants the next generation the most will get them."

And Sherwood is going after those generations, and not just the ones who are a part of the church or school.

"It would have been mighty selfish of Sherwood to build this and say, now just our church members can use this and only our people that we approve.  I mean, we just open it up," said Dr. Catt.

In addition to new sports fields, there's a large pavilion and picnic tables, and a 10,000 square foot field house is soon to be under construction. And to build it all, the church didn't take out a single loan.

"We're not going in any debt to do this.  We're pay as you go."

And other successes of the church have allowed them to build the complex.  The 'generations giving campaign,' as well success from movies.

Success they'll now share with others. "We wanted to do something for the community where people could come and be in."

An expanding complex, expanding the mission of the church. Your first glimpse at the almost completed site may come as soon as July 4th for the Freedom Festival, which is open to the public.

In addition to the field house, and sports fields, there is also an equestrian center and fishing pond on the property.
