ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Last year the Monroe boys track team won state without winning a region title. This year the Tornadoes will head to state as champions of region 1 AAA.
Monroe won the region meet at Albany's Hugh Mills Stadium on Wednesday in convincing fashion. The Tornadoes qualified for state in 11 out of 16 events.
Sir Paul Jones won the 110 meter hurdles and the 300 meter hurdles. He also won the high jump. Donqavious Hill won the 200m and 400m dash. Larry Whitfield won the triple jump and Johnny Moore won the discus.
"They came to me at the beginning of the year and made their goals clear that they wanted to be known as one of the best track teams to come through Monroe High School and I think they have already etched their names in the history books today with their performance" said head coach Octavia Jones.
Westover finished 2nd and qualified for state in 5 events. The state meet is next weekend in Jefferson.
In AAAA the Bainbridge Bearcats are region champions for the 13th year in a row.
Garrett Reynolds won the 100m and 200m dash, Joseph Ausgood won the 800m dash,
Denzel Gamble won the 110 m hurdles, Octavious Scott won the 300m hurdles, Stevenson Crowell won the shot put and Delonte Martistee won the high jump and the triple jump.
The Bainbridge boys have won 13 straight region titles but are still without the coveted state title.
"That's our Achilles heal right now is the state championship. If we can get that it will be a big plus for our program and I think we've got the quality of the kids that qualified out of the 13 events we qualified people and I think we can do it this year I really think we can" said head coach Larry Cosby.
In AAAAA Tift County qualified for state in five events and finished runner up to Warner Robins.
