TIFTON, GA (WALB) –Two children waiting for a school bus were hit by a car and injured in Tift County Wednesday morning. One of them is in intensive care because of his injuries.
It's been a traumatic morning for five year old Kimberly Sanchez. An experience hard for a five year old to comprehend,
"She has been asking me mama what happened, when we went to the hospital she was scared screaming where was she," said her mother Monica Sanchez.
Kimberly and seven year Jonathan Martinez were hit by a car as they crossed Whiddon Mill Road to board a Tift County school bus.
"A school bus was stopped waiting for the children at the bus stop gentleman was traveling north and it looks like he didn't realize the school bus was there until too late," said Trooper Stan White.
Several children, including Kimberly's brother and sisters witnessed it.
"That's where the shoes and everything fell off and over there by the other stop sign is where he landed," said her brother Julian Sanchez.
Images hard for children to forget. "I was calling his name to see if he was alright but he didn't move or nothing, I just heard his throat move a little and that was it," said Julian.
Thankfully Kimberly only suffered cuts and bruises. But Martinez is in Intensive Care and in critical condition, and family members are devastated."His mom is in bad shape, his dad is too," said Monica.
The driver of the car was 92 year old Mason Thompson. He told troopers he didn't see the school bus because of the fog.
Troopers say no charges have been filed yet they are pending the result of the investigation.
