ALBANY, GA (WALB) – Tailgaters at Albany Panthers football games will no longer be breaking the law, now that city commissioners fixed the open container ordinance.

Six years ago, city commissioners voted to allow alcohol in a limited area outside the Civic Center before South Georgia Wildcats games.

Last month, city leaders said they realized that change was only in effect for a year. This morning, commissioners passed a resolution allowing alcoholic beverages to be consumed outside at the civic Center.

It will also allow the Albany Panthers to sell alcoholic drinks, which will help them make money. Asst. City Manager Wes Smith said, "We want to do everything we can to make the team financially viable and the more tailgating, the merrier. We're glad to see it as long as it's done in a responsible manner."

The city had essentially been allowing open containers at the Civic Center by error for the past five years.
