ALBANY, GA (WALB) – It's an old saying that Cops and doughnuts go hand in hand, and over the past three days, they've been flocking to the Albany Krispy Kreme shop.

It wasn't for the doughnuts. They were giving them away in exchange for donations to help special Olympic athletes compete.

Volunteers gave Krispy Kreme coupons to donors on North Slappey Boulevard over the weekend.

This year's goal was to raise $15,000. Near the end of the even on Sunday close to $13,000 was raised, with more to be counted.

"We as agencies like Recreation and Parks, we could not afford to send our athletes if it wasn't for the law enforcement torch run paying for most of it," said Kristin Caso, of the Albany Recreation and Parks Department.

"It helps us a lot, they don't know but it helps us a whole lot," said Billy Griner, Special Olympic Athlete.

This was the sixth annual Cops on Doughnut Shops event. the Olympians will compete in the state games at Emory in May.
