FDA issues defibrillator warning

Posted: Updated:

From NBC News

The FDA has issued a warning about external defibrillators, after reports show some devices don't work when you need them most.

FDA officials say 14 models of external defibrillators may fail to deliver a shock. They may also misread a victim's heart rhythm, and sometimes don't recognize the electrode pads.

All the devices included in the warning are manufactured by Washington-based Cardiac Science Corporation.

The company had issued a recall late last year, but the FDA has learned more models have the same problems.

The defibrillators are used in health care facilities, public places and the home.

FDA officials say alternative AEDs should be used while Cardiac Science Corporation works on the problem. However, in the case of an emergency it is better to use the potentially defective devices over none at all.
